Meet Michael

Dr. Michael Toedt retired as an Assistant Surgeon General and USPHS Rear Admiral with nearly 30 years of service. He previously served as the CMO of the Indian Health Service, and was IHS’s lead expert on medical and public health topics, testifying before Congress and providing national leadership for the clinical and community-based health programs of the agency, and serving as the primary liaison and advocate for IHS health professionals.

Dr. Toedt graduated with honor from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in applied physics and a minor in applied optics and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1995. He completed a residency in family medicine and fellowship in obstetrics at the Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1995-1999.

He has served on numerous IHS and interagency committees, published several articles, and held several medical school academic appointments. He is board certified in family medicine and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Toedt is the recipient of numerous Public Health Service honors and awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal.
